Junk Silver and Slick Coins: What You Need to Know About Silver Coins

Updated: Oct 12, 2020

-Accent Jewelers and Loans coin dealers have been buying 90% and 40% United States silver coins for over 30 years, as well as other silver varieties from foreign countries like Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, and so on… We receive many phone calls and questions about “Junk Silver” or family coin collections, as many people are unaware of what exactly they could be sitting on in terms of “CASH VALUE”.

-Even though many of the details are gone from older “Junk” coins or “slicks” (as they’re sometimes referred to by collectors), so much so that they wouldn’t be “collectible”, they’re still going to be 90% silver and considerably more valuable than the face value of the coin alone.

-These “junk” coins could be any strikes of dimes, quarters, and half dollars from 1964 and earlier, and even some Peace and Morgan dollars could be classified as “junk” silver due to the heavy wear on the coin. 40% coins are primarily Kennedy half dollars from 1965-1970, and their precious metal content alone makes them worth a few dollars. Select strikes of Eisenhower dollars are also 40% silver.

-One the quickest ways to weed through a large collection is to look at the years of each coin, as mentioned above. Another quick way to examine coins is to look at the side of the coin. If you see copper ribbing, it will not be silver. That said, there are some with faint traces of copper, which could be the lesser 40% varieties.
